Therapy Services
I offer therapy services for individuals of all ages, as well as couples and families. Areas of treatment in which I specialize include:
- Attentional and organizational issues, including AD/HD
- Mood issues, including depression and bipolar disorder
- Trauma, including experiences of abuse, PTSD, etc.
- Anxiety/stress issues, ranging from "everyday life" stress to panic attacks
- Family/life transitions, including divorce/separation, loss/grief, new school/job, etc.
- Behavioral problems in children
When it comes to working with children and younger teenagers, I do not use traditional "talk therapy." Instead, I utilize play therapy to help children work through their struggles. Play therapy is a well-researched and clinically validated method for working with children. According to the Association for Play Therapy: "Through play, therapists may help children learn more adaptive behaviors when there are emotional or social skills deficits (Pedro-Carroll & Reddy, 2005). The positive relationship that develops between therapist and child during play therapy sessions provides a corrective emotional experience necessary for healing (Moustakas, 1997)."
If you'd like more information about the research supporting play therapy, the Association for Play Therapy has put together an excellent summary that you can read here.
I welcome questions about this approach from parents, whether it's questions about play therapy in general or my specific methods of utilizing play to help children develop increased coping strategies.
For families involved in ongoing legal disputes (such as divorce or custody) or with open abuse cases, please know that I do have extensive experience working with children, teens, and families through these circumstances. Please call me directly to discuss your specific situation and how I can help your family through this challenging time.
